Skin Ageing

Radically reduce the signs of ageing by optimising skin health

Although ageing is inevitable, you can significantly delay its onset in your skin by using products that optimise the long-term health of your skin, and by making sensible lifestyle decisions. Skin ageing is addressed ageing in 2 ways – by reducing wrinkles and by firming skin. These are both linked to the structure of collagen and elastin in skin and in turn are influenced by a range of other factors. As a rule of thumb, if your barrier function is impaired and your skin is in an inflammatory state the rate of ageing is doubled. So, pay attention to optimising skin health before trying to treat symptoms.

Lifestyle Considerations

Your lifestyle can make a difference to your skin

  • Try to maintain microbial diversity – this applies to both gut and skin health. Eat unheated fermented foods like sauerkraut or kimchi and spend time in nature. Gardening counts, so long as you do not use toxic herbicides and pesticides.
  • Take a good quality oral probiotic and apply a probiotic skincare treatment that contains live strains of beneficial microbes to outcompete pro-ageing species.
  • Essential fatty acid intake – either 15g of flax seed oil per day or 600mg of long chain omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA).
  • Maintain consistent blood sugar levels by eating “whole foods” and limit sugar consumption. Sugar is one of the leading causes of glycation, a process which speeds up the ageing process.
  • Supplement with trace minerals – make sure that copper and zinc are balanced. Many supplements avoid copper because it induces nausea, but they mostly supplement zinc at high doses. These two minerals compete for a common absorption site, so this often results in copper deficiency, and you need copper for collagen and elastin synthesis.
  • Limit external causative factors such as cigarette smoke, dehydration, poor nutrition, extreme temperatures and excessive UV exposure.
  • Ensure your diet contains the amino acids required by the body to make enough of Type 1 Collagen. Eating beans, nuts and seeds will deliver these in a digestible form.
  • Use products containing antioxidants such as Rooibos Leaf Extract, Marula Seed Oil and/or Sesame Seed Oil.
  • Use products containing Hyaluronic Acid to plump up the skin, Mafane to have a relaxing effect on the muscles and/ or GABA (Gamma Aminobutyric Acid) which relaxes tense muscles and reduces small wrinkles.
